One thing became rapidly clear—Uncle March might rule the basement and the grounds, but Aunt Vanessa ruled the kitchen and the rest of the house. Cats weren’t allowed anywhere save the basement or the yard.

“Now Alec, you know this is my house,” she began. “My family’s house for generations—”

Uncle March cleared his throat and rolled his eyes. Aunt Vanessa gave him a look and then continued. The soft shells were fantastic.

“—dating back to the founding fathers. My father came over on the Dove, one of the pair of ships that landed in St. Mary’s in 1634. You know the one?” She wasn’t eating, only holding court.

“I’m afraid I don’t know, Aunt Vanessa, forgive me.”

“What do they teach the young people, Dad? Nothing at all about their heritage?”

“I haven’t set foot on a campus in a decade, ’Nessa. I have no idea.”

“Well, my family’s buried in the graveyard over yonder.” She pointed with a fork out the door of the mudroom. “Right under those oak trees. I’ll walk you over after lunch.”

“What’s for dessert?” Uncle March asked.

Aunt Vanessa looked annoyed and then turned in my direction again. “Do you like peach cobbler?”
